Banská Bystrica situated in the middle of central Slovakia has been one of the most important cities for centuries. Thanks to rich mineral resources and smart location in the Zvolenska Lowland surrounded by the Kemnické and the Starohorské mountains and Poľana it became an important trade crossroad. In recent history the town entered the history when in 1944 became the centre of the Slovak National Uprising. The historical centre of the city became part of Urban preservation areas. In this part of the city we can find many cultural and historical monuments. The most important area of the historical centre is Námestie SNP with the city castle Barbican on the top of the square. Visitors can enjoy panorama of the city from The Clock Tower which was originally part of the town prison. Námestie SNP is lined with many of the beautiful historical buildings as a Thurzo´s House, The Parish Church of Ascension of Virgina Mary, st. Elisabeth´s church and st. Cross´s church, The Old Town Hall, Matejovský´s House and Bethlem´s House. The state gallery has its branches in Bethlem´s house, Dominik Skutecký´s House and Pretorium. In the upper part of the square you can find Mariánsky column. From the other historical monuments you can visit the Monument of the Slovak National Uprising with its exhibition, the exhibition of the scientific department of The Central – Slovakian Museum in Radvaň, Wooden church in Hronsek, Mansion in Dolná Mičiná, Castle in Slovenská Ľupča, Špania dolina village...
Surroundings of the Banská Bystrica are great for winter and summer sports. Well-known ski resorts are Selce, Šachtičky, Donovaly or Králiky.
Visitors of the region may be interested in local spas and thermal springs in Kováčová, Sliač, Brusno, Vyhne or Dudince.
Banská Bystrica is an important cultural and historical city. In 1992 University of Matej Bel was founded in Banská Bystrica. Also many important institutions (State opera, Academy of arts, etc.) and companies chose Banská Bystrica as a city of their place of business. Thanks to great location and infrastructure Banská Bystrica is one of the most important cities of Slovakia. |
